el Brussels looks set to approved free acceleration smoke test limits of 3.0m-1 for turbocharged engines and 2.5m-1 for naturally aspirated diesel engines. At a meeting on 22/3 June the Portuguese will push for the resolution to be adopted.
As from 1 September the VI will use meters to check free acceleration smoke from CVs with a limit of 3.2m-t. If the EC limits are adopted they will probably come into effect in the UK during 1995.
Smoke meters can normally be re-programmed by the manufacturer to take account of new limits.
The Transport and Road Research Laboraoty is currently looking into in-service testing of exhaust emissions to the 1992 limits.
Li The Vehicle Inspectorate says it is to start smoke testing vehicles during spot checks "as soon after 1 September as is practicable".
