• Castrol has introduced Syntruck. its fully synthetic 5W/40 engine oil, and will guarantee engines using it for up to one million km. Syntruck was launched in Germany two years ago and claimed benefits include improved cold start and wear protection, increased mechanical efficiency, reduced emissions and extended drain intervals.
UK trials have been carried Out with two Mercedes-Benz 1838 tractive units operated by NI-,"r and two airport crash tenders at Birmingham Airport. The NFT Mercedes have shown fuel savings up to 4% on trunk ing routes. Operating six days a week, the trials lasted three months.
Castrol claims the Birmingham crash tenders, which must meet stringent performance requirements, accelerate to 80km/h after a cold start, over five seconds quicker using Syntruck. Engine re-build intervals were also doubled, it says.
The Syntruck engine warranty covers new vehicles for one million km or 48 months. For vehicles up to three years old, the cover is for 36 months or 750,000km. Syntruck costs 79 per litre. Castrol's long drain mineral oil costs £1.-78 per litre.
