Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Livestock haulier Gordon Gilder is poised to follow his brother Peter into the courts to protect his right to trade.

Gordon Gilder is taking legal advice this week after one of his lorries, carrying sheep, was turned back by police outside Shoreham. Sussex Police say they can only escort lorries for two consecutive days a week or four a fortnight because of disruption caused by clashes with animal rights protesters.

But Gordon Gilder is arguing that he should be able to carry on his perfectly lawful trade. His brother Peter, who runs a separate livestock haulage business, successfully took the port of Dover to court in April after the harbour board banned livestock hauliers. The board is appealing against the decision.

Gordon Gilder says: "The judge in that case said Dover was wrong to give in to mob rule and for me that principle holds true.

"All I am trying to do is to carry on a perfectly lawful trade. If the police are doing anything they should be prosecuting the protesters who try to stop law abiding people going about their business."
