• Northern businessman Geoffrey Whittaker, accused of committing a £10.25 million fraud involving non-existent commercial vehicles, is set to appear in the dock next month as the case against him begins at Leeds Crown Court.
Forty eight year old Whittaker from Bessacar, Doncaster faces 15 charges of obtaining property by deception. The case moves from Doncaster Magistrates where Whittaker first faced the charges more than a year ago.
The £10.25m allegedly went missing from Whittaker's
Yorkshire-based contract hire companies, Star Vehicle Contracts Ltd and CG Whittaker (Hire), as well as his two Mercedes-Benz truck dealerships in Sheffield and Doncaster before the holding company CG Whittaker (Holdings) went into compulsory liquidation.
The Sheffield truck dealership was subsequently taken over by Northside Truck Centre and the Doncaster business by Charles Sidney.
When CG Whittaker (Holdings) went down four years ago it owed nearly £19.5m.
