To convert the auto EAS transmission to a manual EPS change takes surprisingly little time. Merc's test
EAS to EPS and back again
engineer, Peter Hoffart, unbolted the EAS control unit from the Telligent console before replac ing it with a standard EPS unit, plugging the electrical connectors in the base along the way. Then the emergency
clutch pedal— which normally sits out of the way in the EAS tractor—is released by a red handle and drops down into position.
The next stage is to re programme the Telligent system to operate the 16speed gearbox as a manual. Although you can convert an EAS Telligent box back into an
EPS manual—although frankly we cannot see why you would want to— Mercedes is at pains to stress that you cannot do it the other way around. But the good news is that DaimlerChrysler UK has recently revised its pricing policy for EAS so that from June production you will get the
auto transmission as standard on all its two and threeaxle executive specification Actros tractors.
