ANEW experimental high-efficiency hydraulic transmission will be • exhibited by the Motor Industry Research Association at the Motor Show, which opens at Earls Court on October 16. The transmission consists of a positive-displacement torque converter, using epicyclic gearing in a differential or " shunt-type " transmission.
In this way the mechanical gearing always transmits the greater part of the total power, and the hydraulic drive is merely a " by-pass " used to control the gearing, thus absorbing only a small percentage of the power. The unit to be shown has been used with engines of up to 50 b.h.p.
