THE LONG-PROMISED TAN21 computer system is facing yet more delays as the Vehicle Operator and Services Agency installs more computer hardware before its launch.
The self-service Internet system will allow operators to add and subtract vehicles from their 0-licence and transfer vehicles between 0-licences in different areas, cutting office paperwork. However, CM has learnt that further delays mean most operators won't get a chance to use the system until late this year — almost two and a half years behind schedule. Indeed, back in February 2001, MPs were told that the project. forecast to cost £7.9m, would be completed by September that year.
Now,VOSA says it is installing more servers so the system won't collapse as soon as it's rolled out.
A limited number of operators — understood to be about 100 — are currently trialling the system and VOS A says they are "very positive" about it. A spokeswoman adds: -We have counselled people on the project not to give dates. We are taking a 'softly-softly' approach to be sure the system will work."
