ANGRY TRUCK drivers at Felixstowe container port have been facing long delays as the terminal struggles to cope with a surge in freight traffic.
One Suffolk haulier says his drivers have been delayed for up to four or live hours at the port, with many now refusing to carry out container work: "Some days they can be in and out, while others have been stranded for over four hours with nowhere to go.The staff have not done anything to rectify the situation."
Brian Walker, general manager at Securicor Omega Container Logistics also says that there have been "intermittent problems", but they are not as bad as at Southampton container terminal. Ian Wilson from local haulier Hanbury Davies believes that,like many other ports, there have been delays but this has been largely due to the holiday season and a shortage of trained crane drivers.
Paul Davey, Felixstowe corporate affairs manager, admits that there have been problems: -We have had a temporary blip with delays during peak times due to a shortage of staff, but we have 35 cranes out today.
"We have a number of new drivers in training and hope that things will improve shortly," he concludes.
