HAVING JUST read Bob Russett's 'Sound Off' (CM 14-20 August), I can only draw the conclusion that it's no wonder that the road haulage industry is in the state it's in.
Surely large logistics providers have seen this driver/skills shortage coming for some time, and yet they seem to have done nothing about it. It seems to me that they only have themselves to blame.
I was taken on at 17 by a small haulage company, given the van to drive and put through my HGV, ADR and my CPC. There was no Road Haulage Modernisation Fund for them. My training was an investment in their future.
It seems to me that the big boys in road haulage want to have their cake, and eat it too. Unfortunately life isn't like that; if they want to fill their driver/skills shortage, they should stop worrying about modernisation funds and distribution training councils and do what small companies have been doing for years: investing in their own future.
