Hampshire-based Spectro offers fuel, oil and hydraulic fluid plus filter and debris analysis services to operators worried about contamination.
The diesel fuel service costs less than £100 and takes four to five days to report back the results, which are sent by fax or e-mail. Hauliers need to provide at least 100mlfuel sample to Spectro who will test for the presence of viable fungal spores and aerobic bacteria. However, Spectro also sells its own 250m1 test sample kits which are both clean and leak-proof.
The presence of a high content of aerobic bacteria in an otherwise micro-organism free sample of dery often indicates that the environment may soon become favourable for further microbial activity. Slight water contamination favours the self-perpetuating environment of the fungus Hormoconis Resinae that forms the dense mycelial "mats" which break up and move through the fuel system causing problems.
These mats also release organic acids and produce a highly-oxygenated environment which can favour the electrolytic attack of metals, even penetrating tank coatings, consuming 0-rings and rubber hosing.
