The Latest Proposals of an Important Passenger-carrying Concern, the Headquarters of Which are at Whitehaven.

-•-••• •••-• ..

ALTIIOUGH separated from the .mainland by 50 miles of sea, the Isle of Man may this season be served by a fleet' of motorbuses operated by Cumberland Motor Services, Ltd., of Whitehaven. Arrangements are now being made by the company to make applications for licences to the town authorities of Peel, Castletown and Port Erin. It will be noticed that. Douglas, the capital town on the island, is omitted, this for the reason that the Douglas Corporation itself operates a

fleet of motorbuses. We learn that Cumberland Motor Services, Ltd., contemplates the opening up of three routes, these being (I) Peel to Douglas,

(2) Port Erin to Douglas, and (3) Peel to Port Erin. These services will be maintained all the year round. Application has been made to the Douglas Corporation for a stand, and the proposal has been made that the services will be so arranged that no more than two vehicles will be on the stand at the same time. As to the vehicles which it is proposed to operate, these will be of the single-deck type, running on pneumatic tyres, with a capacity for 32 passengers.

The headquarters of Cumberland Motor Services, Ltd., are at Whitehaven, and the company's vehicles serve the whole of the Cumberland coast between Gosforth and Silloth—about 25 miles—with easterly routes to Cockermouth tind Keswick and a branch line from Maryport through Wigton to Carlisle. From Whitehaven there is a half-hourly service to Maryport and thence an hourly service from Maryport to Carlisle. The buses which run from Cockermouth to the Lake Dis trict are fed from Whitehaven, Workington and Maryport. The vehicles on service between Cockermouth to Keswick run alternatively each side of Bassenthwaite Lake. Buses also run from Cockermouth, through the Vale of Lorton, to Buttermere. The company's fleet consists of open and closed saloon buses and motor coaches.
