WHEN brake drums have suffered a moderate degree of scoring and are robust enough to allow skimming it is often the case that the workshop lathe will not be capable of swinging a drum.
A new brake-drum lathe which is capable of machining both drums and discs up to 28in. in diameter has recently been introduced to the UK by E. P. Barrus. This machine is driven by a 1 hp electric motor and has spindle speeds of 60, 100 and 170 rpm and a spindle travel of Sin. Micrometer-controlled variable feed rates of 0.004 to 0.017in. per revolution are provided for drum brakes.
The machine is also capable of machining friction disc brakes when the feed rates are 0.001 to 0.020in. per revolution.
A selection of bell clamps are supplied with the machine and these cater for all designs of brake drum. A second unit which comprises a double-sided cutting tool is provided for machining brake discs. As with the equipment for machining drums, this unit, will accommodate both hubbed and hubless discs.
