• Heart of England Tours proprietor George Day made a strong attack on the conduct of the West Midland Traffic Commissioners last week when he withdrew his application to renew the company's 12-vehicle operator's licence, Traffic Commissioner Ronald Jackson said Day handed in a letter which he wished to be read in public.
Day's letter said the application was being withdrawn because of serious problems occasioned by two fires at the depot, with the result that the company had difficulty renewing its insurance cover.
It had also ceased operating in protest against the Commissioners' "biased and unfair" treatment of the company since the second fire.
It is bringing the whole matter to the notice of the Minister as it considers that the commissioners' handling of the whole affair was corrupt and improper.
Jackson said that Day is entitled to express the view that the Commissioners' conduct was improper, but he was not entitled to say that it was corrupt.
