'HIE NORTH-EAST Assembly plans to produce a five-year strategy designed to help the region's transport operators do their bit to tackle global warming.
The assembly admits that its previous transport strategy, published in 2002. is redundant in the light of ever-increasing demands on the region's roads and a change in national transport and environment policies.
Malcolm Bowes, the assembly's deputy chief executive, reports: "If the current trend continues, congestion will only get worse and this will have a considerable effect on greenhouse gases.
"We're facing a significant environmental challenge."
Assembly vice-chairman Dave Ledger adds: "Transport, for both public and freight, is the key to the North-East's continued economic growth. Any future investment in infrastructure must reflect this while making environmental sense," he warns.
Specialist consultants are scheduled to be appointed next month with the strategy document on course to he published next year.
