• The first freight trains could be running through the Channel Tunnel in under six months, the tunnel's operator has announced.
Eurotunnel says truck piggyback services could be operating by January or February next year---up to four months before the official opening of the tunnel.
Price talks with operators are expected to start "later this year" and haulier accounts set up "shortly".
Negotiations will take place between Eurotunnel and operators on a one to one basis. The tunnel operator says there have already been negotiations with customers on service.
• Despite the need for modifications to its freight wagons to stop the spread of fire. Eurotunnel says it is "very confident" of finally receiving certification from the AngloFrench authority responsible for the tunnel's safety • Hazardous goods operators wishing to use the tunnel have been given little immediate clarification on their prospects —a full policy outlining which low risk gases and substances will be allowed is not expected for up to two more months, It had been scheduled for the end of July.
