As increasing numbers of companies move towards some form of third-parb contracted maintenance β mainly through franchised dealerships βthe type of engine oil used in vehicles will become a given, if not a total irrelevance to operators as truck makers dictate their engine lubricant specifications.
If you exclude the larger fleets we supply β such as Ryder and Royal Mail β that still do their own maintenance, the percentage of our retail truck sales with contract maintenance included is probably between 40%-50%," says DAF Trucks marketing director Tony Pain (right).
However, he adds: "I think it's reasonable for the customer to ask his service provider what sort of oil he is using, not least as he may have a vehicle on a five-year contract where the choice of lubricant could have an effect on durability. With modem engines burning little oil nowadays, and with far less topping-up needed, it's important to use good-quality lubes.
