• Boalloy has no shortage of rivals in the UK trailer market, although with the demise of Utility there's now one less. Boalloy has already picked up a number of exUtility customers. According to Gerry Brown, SDC "is the force to be reckoned with—they're going from strength to strength. They've focussed on a pretty standard product with good value engineering." SDC's modern production facility clearly helps, he adds: 'They came into the game with a blank sheet of paper and they've got good economies of scale." Gibb also cites Montracon "because of their size".
Although the firm is aiming to boost its share of the 'big-fleet' market with its Merker Tautliner, Brown says there's no shortage of demand for more customised products: 'Three to four years ago it was suggested that the market would opt for cheaper products and 'bespoke' would disappear, but it hasn't actually happened. On the body it's got even worse!"
When it comes to a Continental invasion Brown reckons: "The trick of getting into the UK market is you've got to get a UK partner." He cites the tie-ups between K6gel and Don-Bur and Southflelds and Krone. "it doesn't affect the chassis so much as its donor. It's what's on top that's sexy!"
