NORTHUMBRIA POLICEhave welcomed a Ilm cash boost to help them tackle the growing problem of arson in the North-East.
The funds will help strengthen the force's Operation Chariot — a unit set up to hunt down the arsonists who have set light to at least 18 haulage yards in the region since 1998.
In the latest attack last Monday (26 January) at Stargate industrial estate, Ryton, two trailers were destroyed. Police are treating the fire as arson, but it is too early to say whether the blaze is linked to previous incidents Inspector Frank Wood of Northumbria Police's community safety department says: "Northumbria Police work in partnership with the fire service to address the problems caused by arson.
"This money means we will make further strides forward in fire investigation and prevention."
