Construction on the A5 project in Northern Ireland is expected to begin by 2013 following a public consultation. At 55 miles long, it is the largest road scheme undertaken in Northern Ireland. and will upgrade the entire western corridor from Derry to the border at Aughnacloy via Strabane and Omagh to dual carriageway status.
The Scottish Government's Strategic Transport Project Review, which was published at the end of 2008, says that all the A9 between Inverness and Perth and also the A96 between Inverness and Nairn will be duelled. Work is likely to start in 2012 at the earliest, although no definite date has been announced.
Phil Flanders, Road Haulage Association director for Scotland and Northern Ireland, says: "The A5 scheme is particularly important because it will provide excellent transport links across Northern Ireland as well as improve links to the south. We are not sure when the Scotland projects will start but we hope it will be soon."
