Iveco’s new Stralis offers owners lower fuel costs

By Will Shiers IVECO’S NEW Stralis, launched in Italy this week, could offer a ‘total cost of ownership’ some 4% lower than the outgoing model, claims the truck maker.
This is partly due to the incorporation of fuel-saving features proven on the EcoStralis. Aerodynamics have been tidied up, dropping the cab’s drag co-efficient by 3%. Notable revisions are the grille, air deflectors, external sun visor and bumper.
The interior of the basic cab shell has been redesigned, with a new dashboard and repositioning of dials and switchgear. In-cab storage has also been improved.
The new Stralis will initially be offered in Euro-5 and Euro-6 guise. Iveco is tackling Euro-6 without EGR, using its HI-eSCR catalytic reduction system instead. The firm says this has many advantages, including improved fuel economy (from optimised combustion), less weight, and greater torque and power. Swept volume has been increased too, with the Cursor 9 replacing the Cursor 8 and the 11.1-litre Cursor 11 succeeding the 10.3-litre Cursor 10. The Cursor 13 remains at 12.9 litres. In all Cursor engines common-rail fuel injection replaces unit injectors.
Iveco has renamed the range, with the old Active Space full-width cab now christened the Hi-Way. The narrow-cab Active Time becomes the Hi-Road and the daycab low-roof version the Hi-Street.
New Stralis can be ordered now but the first right-hand drive models won’t be delivered until the end of the year. Full details in CM 12 July.
