• The Freight Transport Association is urging the government to establish an organisation solely accountable for the performance of the road network.
ETA President John Allan says this "strategic road network operator" could also coordinate the planning, investment and delivery of new road schemes, as well as being responsible for reducing congestion and speeding up movements on a day-to-day basis.
These comments were made before an audience of MPs and peers at the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday 3 June.
Allan says the government needs to "get a grip" on the whole issue of producing and operating a road infrastructure for the fourth-largest economy in the world. Without a viable transport system, he adds, society and Industry will grind to a halt. "Industry and motorists pay enormous sums in road-associated taxation and are entitled to a very high quality of service, which they are not presently getting," he says.
