II According to Shell, only one in 14 HGV drivers are aware of the benefits of fuel additives, despite evidence showing that additives improve fuel efficiency by over 2%.
Shell claims to be the only oil company which puts additives in all grades of its petrol and diesel — it says that 60% of fuels sold contain no additives.
These additives include detergents which keep the engine fuel inlet system clean, prolonging engine life and reducing exhaust emissions by up to 12%, it says.
An anti-corrosion additive is said to maintain engine performance, while an anti-foaming agent allows smoother filling at the pump.
