Following last month's vote by the Transport Committee in Brussels, this is what it contained: • Member states may apply charges to lorries using major roads on the basis of air and noise pollution.
• Congestion charges may be introduced at peak hours as long as they also apply to private cars.
0 Member states have to invest the Eurovignette revenue into research for cleaner vehicles, better infrastructure and alternative modes of transport.
IP These rules are not binding, but seek to set a common EU standard for member states who choose to apply the charges.
Some MEPs wanted to add CO, emissions to the list of chargeable costs, since lorries, like aeroplanes are considered partly responsible for climate change. However, the Transport Committee last month voted against this proposal.
