TAST NOVEMBER we dealt with 4 an improved form of gully cleanser combining the open and closed circuit systems of gully emptying, which was produced by the Lacre Motor Car Co., of Letchworth, Herts.

Another machine, closely resembling _this, but embodying small improvements, has now been constructed for the Stockholm Stads Gatukontor. The chief improvement in this is the incorporation of a pulley for the wire rope leading from the winding drum by which the heavy suction pipe of the .machine is lifted and dropped. The windlass now operates with the greatest ease, and the whole machine can be handled by one man.

One feature of the particulat vehicle we inspected was that it is not only equipped as a gully-emptier, but also has extra lengths of hose,for usewhen emptying cesspits.

The outfit consists of a 400-gallon tank of the inclined 'milk-churn type, mounted on a 30 h.p. Model 0 .Lacre chassis of 2 tons had capacity.

Is cleansing gullies by the suction' method only, it is essential constantly to stir the sediment, and whether the gully contains 'only a few pounds of sediment or many, the whole of the 40 gallons to 70 gallons of liquid in it must also be extracted.

• With the closed-circuit system, the tank is full a clean water, or water

mixed with some disinfectant, and this water replaces the sediment which is 'extracted from the gully, the water-sealing contents of the gully which were originally there and the water from the tank equivalent to the sediment extracted being left, behind.. This makes the tank equal in its capacity for dealing with gullies, to one approximately four times the size working on the plain vacuum system. Consequently, it can deal with from 40 to 70 gullies, according to the solid contents of these. In addition, no stirring at all is required when the closed-circuit system is:,in operation, the water being sprayed into the gullies under a fairly,high pressure from a rose spraying head.
