SIXTEEN million working days a year are lost as a result of workshop accidents, according to the Health & Safety Commission's annual report.
"These figures reinforce our view that health and safety at work are fundamental to the economic well-being of the country," said Mr Bill Simpson, Chairman of the Commission.
The latest annual statistics show that in 1976 there were 326,500 notified accidents, including nearly 600 people killed.
"Our over-riding concern," the Commission say, "is to encourage the participation of those who create and work with risks in efforts to overcome them."
They have done this through the regulations on safety representatives and safety committees that will come into force in October; through the establishment of representative advisory committee covering both particular hazards and particular industries; and through full consultation with all concerned about their proposals.
