NEW ETA PRESIDENT John Russell is keen to prove that the association is not fixated on road transport but also promotes all types of transport, including rail and multi-modal.
"There is occasional disquiet from the rail industry that the FTA is mainly a road-transport forum and doesn't promote its interests but I would like to dispel that myth." says Russell, who takes over at the FTA from Exel chief executive John Allan.
"1 also think there is a perception that the ETA concentrates on the user of transport rather than the provider, but we need to have a co-ordinated approach if we are going to continue to have an effective dialogue with government."
As chairman and MD ofJohnG Russell (Transport), Russell has spearheaded a diversification from general haulage to include containerisation, storage and repair. The company has also been at the forefront of combined road and rail freight operations.
Russell has been a member of ETA's National Executive Board since 1994.
