AA man killed on M-way

• An AA patrolman was killed after being struck by a lorry while working on the hard shoulder of the A1(M) near Dishforth, North Yorkshire.
Michael Duerden, aged 35, was repairing a caravan wheel puncture, He died at the scene of the accident on the northbound carriageway. The lorry driver, who comes from West Yorkshire, was interviewed by police and released on bail.
The AA said it was prepared to review its procedures for working on motorway hard shoulders, but there was no suggestion yet that the accident could have been prevented. Spokeswoman Denise Raven said: "We are awaiting the police report on the incident, and we shall study it with an open mind."
Father-of-two Duerden was the 49th AA patrolman to die in the course of duty since the organisation was set up in 1905.
