• Bedfordshire police are warning hauliers to check their vehicles' tyres, after nearly 30% of lorries they examined were found unsafe.
Two roadside checks showed 28% of the 236 commercial vehicles stopped had at least one dangerous tyre (less than 2mm of tread). Nearly one in 10 had tyres below the legal limit of lmm.
Accident prevention officer PC Richard Bratton questions the logic of allowing car drivers a higher minimum of 1.6mm, and says: "We have ended up with 67 vehicles with at least one tyre either defective or with tread below 2mm. I accept that tyres are very expensive, but I am forced to
ask: what price ' safety?"
He adds: "What chance would the driver of a large heavily laden HGV have of stopping safe• ly on a wet road with such poor tyres?"
