approached in June by Hartlepool Steel Fabrication to transport a stair tower to Kvaener Oil and Gas, Port Clarence. Since the tower weighs 30 tonnes and boasts dimensions of 18.8m x 7m x 6.9m, other hauliers had felt unable to engage in such a massive undertaking. Not so Stiller, which rose to the challenge with a gutsy determination. Having obtained a special order from the Department of Transport, a full route survey revealed what might be the Achilles heel of the project: a pipe bridge belonging to ICI Billingham measuring 7.528m high at the lowest point. The local council and the police thought the bridge too low—unlike Stiller Transport, which, with its specialist equipment, was not in the least faint-hearted.
