• Furious residents of a small Cambridgeshire village plan a series of blockades on the A47 to force the Government into building a long-promised bypass.
At a meeting this week residents from Thorney vented their anger at the 25,000 vehicles which they say pass through the village every day— including 6,000 WA's. The Highway Agency's Jim Middleton told the meeting that funding for a bypass would be found, but it could take another five years.
Richard Harlock, of Thorney village's HQ Forklifts, says the village has been waiting for a promised bypass for more than 60 years. He says Thorney is the only village left on the busy A47 between Peterborough and Kings Lynn without one.
"Feelings are running high in the village following numerous serious and fatal accidents on the road and growing pollution," he says. "The failure for the bypass to be mentioned in this summer's Transport White Paper was the last straw for many here."
Harlock is prepared to send his vehicles to any blockade; the first of these is likely to take place before Christmas.
