• A 78-year-old woman was crushed to death under the back wheels of a single decker bus because the safety device on the doors failed to release her when she became trapped.
This was stated at an inquest in Preston last week, when a verdict of accidental death was returned on Miss Mary Aspinall, of Gillibrand Walk, Chorley, Lancs.
Mr Albert Evans, a vehicle examiner, said that if the safety device had been working the doors would have automatically opened and released the woman. He went on to say that someone must have known that the device was not working as the wiring had been removed.
It was stated that no proceedings are to be taken against either the operator Ribble Motor Company, or the driver of the bus.
