• A second executive version of the Leyland National is currently being planned by British Leyland in conjunction with the National Bus Company, which is to operate the bus. The first version made its debut at a "Moving people in cities" conference at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory earlier this year.
The vehicle, which is on show at London's Olympia this week as part of the Business Efficiency Exhibition, features individual seats, dictation facilities and a mini computer. At present NBC is evolving its own specification though the basic executive concept is likely to be unchanged when the vehicle enters service. It is unlikely to take delivery of the vehicle until next year. Until then the first model is being loaned by British Leyland to selected users.
These have so far included the committee of the RAC, the Advanced School of Motorists and various oil companies. The Leyland main board has also used it as a mobile boardroom. Other potential uses for the LN which are being developed are for a casualty clearing station, a mobile police headquarters and as an ambulance.
