The Drivers Action Movement (DAM) is a non-political pressure group for haulage drivers and therefore takes no side in the recent fuel protest. Some of our members joined the protest while others stayed away.
Those of us in the industry have long been aware of the effects on competitiveness of the high cost of UK fuel. But DAM considers there is a more important issue that the industry needs to address.
Since its formation, a key point in the DAM charter has been the effect of LOW HAULAGE RATES on company profitability and drivers' pay and conditions.
if only the rolling motorways go-slows and demonstrations had focussed on this point. It seems that hauhers' solidarity does not stretch to improving the industry at the most obvious and basic level.
We fear that any reduction in fuel tax will simply make it harder to negotiate improved rates for the job, and will be treated as a cost-saving measure with no benefits passed on to drivers.
