• Toll booths are to be used on Birmingham's northern relief road, even though the Government has ruled them out on the majority of Britain's motorway network, Contractor Midland Expressway says there will be up to 10 toll categories, varying from around £1.70 for a light vehicle to £3.00 for LGVs.
A public inquiry into the proposed motorway, which would run from Coleshill, east of Birmingham, to Cannock, is due to finish this summer.
The Department of Transport says the Western Orbital Motorway, linking the M42 south of Birmingham to the M6 north of Wolverhampton, would be paid for by shadow tolling.
Effectively, this means the people who operate the road monitor the number of vehicles using it and the Government pays them accordingly," adds the Department.
The DOT is monitoring German trials of electronic tolling, where road users are charged individually but without suffering the delays caused by toll booths.
