From August 2001two letters will denote the city and county in which the vehicle was first registered, followed by two numbers denoting the year of registration and three further letters.

Hauliers will be allowed to display the GB Euro symbol—a circle of 12 stars above the national identifier on a blue background—on the nearside of the plate, but English, Scottish and Welsh flags will be prohibited.
From March 2001 all number plates will have to be in a specified typeface, making them more decipherable for speed cameras.
