• Nationwide trials are under way to test an ,ntermodal car transportation system.
Freightliner subsidiary Autoliner is tailing the Car-Rac system which uses a single container unit to move cars by rail from Southampton to a railhead in Scotland.
The intermodal system is cutting 430 out of 450 road miles for each consignment, with four Car-Racs making the journey each night. Cranes transfer the six-car unit between train and truck in around five minutes.
Autoliner general manager Mike Newman says Car-Rac is not only much faster than road; it could also reduce the amount of cars damaged switching between rail to road transport from around 5% to less than 1%.
If the trial is a success Autoliner believes the business could grow to capture as much as 5% of the car movement market within the next two years.
