• The business programme for the annual conference of the Road Haulage Association, at Brighton from October 25 to 27, opens on the morning of Tuesday October 26 with the awarding of a medal and cheque to the winner of the essay competition, this year's subject being "British Haulage in the Common Market".
The winner will present his essay for discussion, after which there will be discussions on the work of the Commercial and Vehicle Security Committees chaired respectively by H. A. Russett and J. T. Brown. The afternoon will be devoted to
talks, as follows: Ray Gunter, PC, MP, a former Minister of Labour, on "Industrial Relations in the '70s"; Dr Clifford Sharp, Leicester University, on "Road goods vehicles and the environment"; C. W. Colby, director of development at Ashridge College, on "Marketing in the road haulage industry".
Proceedings on the following day will begin with talks by M. Cobb, deputy director, industrial relations, CBI, on "Industrial Relations Act" and by J. W. Furness, assistant chief engineer, DoE, on "Construction, design and use of road goods vehicies".
After lunch Charles Klapper, formerly editor of Modern Transport, G. W. Quick Smith, formerly deputy chairman of NFC, Colin Jones, Financial Times, and Tom D. Corpe, solicitor, will form the panel of a brains trust with Eddy Barber, commercial manager, Road Way, acting as questionmaster.
