• The Vehicle Inspectorate is to work with operators following a rise in the number of trucks failing the annual test which the VI says it cannot explain. It says there is no "noticeable worsening in trading conditions for operators". This year it will be investigating the causes of the deterioration in test performance. • A crackdown on operators flouting drivers' hours has been signalled with the trial of new equipment this year to analyse tachograph records and to check that tachographs have not been tampered with. • Maintenance standards in the South-East and Scotland were significantly lower than last year. The VI is looking to see what might be behind the figures in the South-East, where there seems to be a downward trend.
