• Police are hunting a gang of conmen who tricked a truck driver into handing over his 260,000 load of wine and champagne.
The incident happened between 9.30am and 10.30am last Monday (27 January) in Easton, near Thurrock. The four men persuaded the driver that they were the rightful recipients of the load as he approached the depot and told him that he could unload in the street.
Police say that they got the driver to sign a receipt and even made him a cup of tea as they transferred the hundreds of boxes of alcohol into their two stolen 16-tonne trucks before driving off with their haul.
PC Ray Bailey from Essex police says: "It must have taken them over an hour to load their vehicles. They were parked on a main road and someone must have seen them. If you have, contact Grays police station."
