THREE Morrison-Electricar 12/18 battery-electric vans for I internal transport have been purchased by W. D. and H. 0. Wills, Ltd., a branch of the Imperial Tobacco Co. of Great Britain and Ireland, Ltd. As no -further space was available in the No. 4 factory at Bristol for storing Wild Woodbine cigarettes it became neeessary. to store them in No. 6 factory, 50-100 yards away, and to provide inter-.
factory transport. •
For handling the cartons, off the production line it was decided to use wooden pallets and fork-lift trucks. A vehicle to carry two pallets, each with nine cartons, was considered convenient, and 25 journeys were required in nine working hours, giving a total mileage of 14-2. This called for frequent—starting and stopping, with many short waiting periods, and a complete absence of fumes and odours when
entering the storage building.
The 12/18 chassis, with a Crompton 15-cell battery of 189-a.h. capacity, met these requirements. A special body, open at one side only to allow the loading of two pallets, was designed by the Morrison-Eleetricar distributors, 'Fransport Electrics, Ltd., 97-101 Jacob Street, Bristol, in conjunc, tion with the Wills Engineering Department.
The side-loading bay has .retractable ramps which automatically allow, for the lowering of the deck level of the vehicle when the load is transferred from the fork-lift truck.
