• A circular advising local authorities on means of "boosting the bus and civilizing the car" was sent out by the DoE on Tuesday.
Among recommendations in the circular is one that residents should not have to walk more than 400 metres or five minutes to the nearest bus stop in residential areas. This should be reduced for residents in high-density developments.
Firms are asked to allow buses to set down passengers within their premises. Other means of encouraging travel by bus suggested, in the circular, are reducing car parking space and developing bus lanes in industrial areas to prevent buses being delayed by workers' cars during peak hours.
The circular, No. 82/73 can be obtained from HMSO, price 11p.
