Ray Smith Demountable., 18 West End Road, Maxey, Peterborough.
The Ray Smith demountable system employs the roller and guide-rail principle of body demounting and simplicity of operation, light weight and secure body locking by twistlocks are the main areas where it is claimed to score. Also the system can be built to interchange with other systems which employ the roller and guide-rail principle. Tipper and drawbar-trailer versions are among the applications. Rey Smith demountables can be supplied through any bodybuilder, and the body base-frame can be tailored to suit the bodybuilder's requirements for length, width, cross-member spacing and side-rave design. The rear of the body is raised by a bridge which blends in as part of the main guide-rails. This bridge lifts under the strongest part of the body, the main runners, and so does not need to engage in special sockets or cross-members allowing any make of type of body to be raised without over-stressing. The lifting bridge is raised by twin hydraulic rams, powered by a Smiths electro-hydraulic unit similar to that used for Ratcliff tail-lifts. No modifications are required to the chassis as the lifting bridge, hydraulic rams, electro-hydraulic power-pack, control valve and twistlocks are mounted on the guide-rail assembly, which is simply bolted to the chassis as a unit. A demountable design using air suspension in place of hydraulics will soon be available from Ray Smith.
