ZI A voluntary scheme of registration for LGV driving schools now seems likely, largely based on ideas devel-oped by the Road Haulage Distribution and Training Council and the Road Transport Industry Training Board. The RTITB is still responsible for about 60 approved schools which it accredits and inspects.
Li The new scheme would be endorsed by the Government through the DSA and has received the backing of Steven Norris, Minister for Local Transport and Road Safety. The scheme would be self funding but the Government may provide "seed money".
LI The scheme will be monitored in a number of ways and, like ADI for car driving schools, may lead to legislation if the Government can be persuaded of its benefits.
:1 The test may be toughened to include laden training after Norris expressed his "astonishment" at its omission.
lj Industry figures meet at DSA headquarters in Nottingham on 12 July to work out the details.
