Volvo let us loose on its car proving ground with the new models.
At 18 tonnes there was a marked difference between the 240 and 280hp versions of the FL — the former is quicker through the gears and in between gears. That 40hp difference makes a big difference at 18 tonnes, although the 240hp proved more than competent.
Next up was a 26-tonne FE, where the 320hp option was working hard even though our test truck was carrying no more than half its maximum payload. Considering that it overlaps with the 6x4 FM9, it might be best reserved for on-road 6x2 applications.
The 7.2-litre engine weighs about 500kg less than the well proven nine-litre lump, and judging by this brief acquaintance we don't think that potential extra payload will be enough to entice many operators to downgrade their engine and cab choices.
All the trucks we drove at Gothenburg were fitted with Hill Hold and Jake brakes, two additions we certainly approve of. Hill Hold will only cost you an extra £175.
