THREE new fork-lift trucks of i 0-cwt. capacity cane inspected at this year's Mechanical Handling Exhibition at Olympia, which takes place from June 4-14. Two are petrolengined machines and the other is a battery-electric. In the 1-ton class, there are also three new appliances, two of which are battery-electrics and one a petrol model.
At the other end of the scale is a massive 8-ton model by a company entering the field of industrial equipment, Whilst three new mobile cranes are displayed, a 2-3-tonner, a 5-tonner and a 20-ton net. .
Other new models include a lowloading trailer, a battery-electric tractor and a mobile conveyor. Most exhibitors have concentrated upon detail improvements in their products and the evolution of auxiliary equipment to make their main units applicable for wider employment.
Single pedal control for both braking and forward movement is under development by Brush Coachwork, Ltd., Loughborough. In the normal position the brakes are on. Depression of the pedal releases the brakes and brings the speed controller into action.
The company's display includes highand low-loader machines with elevating platforms and the popular Cob tractor.
A new Staffa 2-3-ton mobile crane appears on the stand of Chamberlain Industries, Ltd., Stalia Road, London, E.10. Its chief feature is a hydraulic D12
ram for raising and lowering the jib. An engine-driven pump supplies the power and the ram is safeguarded against failure by a non-return valve. The power unit is a Newage-Austin 1,200 c.c. engine which develops 15 b.h.p. at 1,800 r.p.m. Ease of maintenance was a primary consideration in the design.
The company also shows a 2-ton automatic tip-up vehicle ramp and a 25-cwt. portable workshop crane.
A roller conveyor in which the brackets carrying the roller assemblies are resiliently mounted is being shown by I, Collis and Sons, Ltd., Regent Square, Gray's Inn Road, London, W.C.1. The design ensures that shock loading is not transmitted to the ball bearings. This unit, known as the RolaVeyor heavy-duty type, is new. Other Collis appliances well established in popularity are also exhibited.
Conveyancer Fork Trucks, Ltd., Liverpool Road, Warrington, offers forklift trucks with petrol, oil and electric power units, and the model 6-20 is claimed to be the only British appliance with a fully automatic fluid. drive. Adoption of this mode of transmission, the company'states, obviates the excessive clutch wear inherent in the operation of factory vehicles.
The model 6-20, which has a capacity of 6,000 lb. and alternative lift heights of 9 ft., 12 ft. and 14 ft., is displayed, together with three electric trucks and .a petrol-engined type. A wide range of attachments is also Shown.
All the machines shown on the stand of Coventry Climax Engines, Ltd., Widdington Road Works, Coventry, are o il-engined. Good manceuvrability is afforded by the 124-cubic ft. shovel loader; this characteristic also marks the model TNID fork-lift truck, claimed to be the smallest oil-engined 1-ton appliance of its type.
Two examples of the TMD 209 model and one of the heavier FTF 512 forklift truck are displayed. A clamp attachment for handling baled or boxed goods without pallets can also be inspected.
At the time of going to press, the company was hoping to show a new 10,000-lb. fork-lift truck with powerassisted steering.
Mobile Elevator
Equipment Repairs, Ltd., 19-20, The Viaduct, Alperton, Middx, displays a new mobile elevator suitable for lowering Components from vehicles raised on hoists. Several versions of the Becker Twin-Lift hoist are also shown.
Fourways (Engineers), Ltd., Thornwood Common, Epping, introduces a new portable conveyor, the model LW. This has.a minimum loading height of 1 ft. 3 ins, and a track 1 ft. 9 ins. wide. For customers who require a compact unit, the company offers the New Junior model. This machine, like the Fourways JE type, embodies a patented form of drive which enables the track to run on both booms with freedom of travel, whilst permitting the booms to operate independently.
The display of the Harborough Construction Co., Ltd., Logan Street, Market Harborough, Leics, includes three low-loading pedestrian-controlled trucks in the 685 series, one fitted with an elevating platform, and a series 670 elevating-platform truck. This type has found wide employment in factories with limited floor space.
A Harbilt pallet truck is under development by-the concern. A. Hirst and Son, Ltd., Crescent Works, Meadow Lane, Dewsbury, has produced a new battery-electric forklift truck of 1-ton capacity. It is a three-wheeled machine and can turn in a radius of 5 ft. 10 ins. Models can be supplied with lifts up to a maximum of 10 ft.
The Mark 10 petrol-driven 10-cwt. fork-lift truck is a recent addition to the company's range. It is aftailable with either a Ford 8 or a Ford 10 engine. Fuel consumption is stated to average a third of a gallon per hour. This machine is 3 ft. 8 ins, wide and its outside turningcircle is of 13 ft. 6 ins. diameter.
Two other Hirst products shown at Olympia for the first time are the Mark 5 tractor, which has a drawbar pull of 1,000 lb., and the Mark 4 extra,highlift truck—virtually a platformelevating truck for raising 1-ton loads to a height of 8 ft. 6 ins.
Many new devices are displayed on the stand of I.T.D., Ltd., 95-99, Ladbroke Grove, London, W.11. . The Stacatruc Perkins-engined model 2D1-1/9 is now fitted with equipment c n the air-intake and exhaust outlets to reduce fire risks. An air-operated starter motor is incorporated.
The Rodman grab device, developed by the Stockport Manufacturing Co., Ltd., is shown fitted to a model 30EH/9 truck. A self-centring mechanism ensures that the load is not taken off balance.
Batteries on electric Stacatruc machines can be readily changed by means of a special new trolley. Sideshifting forks, with a 6-in, lateral traverse, are shown on an Aerolift 20P1-1./9. Petrol-engined Stacatruc models 2P1-1 may now be supplied with Austin four-cylindered units.
Pedestrian-controlled fork-lift trucks, said to be the only ones of their kind made in Britain, can be seen on the stand of Lansing Bagnall, Ltd., Kingsclere Road, Basingstoke. These have a capacity of 15 cwt, and are intended for use in multi-storied buildings with limited space and floor
loadings. This concern also shows two industrial tractors, one a heavy-duty model, an electric 5-6-ton tractor, three pallet trucks, one of which is rider-controlled, three stillage trucks, two of whieh are pedestrian-controlled; and a power-jack truck designed for work in heavy-vehicle depots.
A new Lansing Bagnall development which may be examined is a hand pallet truck which is shortly to go into production.
Turningradius is minimized by the form of drive incorporated in models made by Leverstart, Ltd„ 185-187, Tooting High Street, London, S.W.17. The latest product of this concern is a battery-electric 15-cwt. fork-lift truck of exceptionally light weight. On the Leverstart four-wheel-drive fork-lift truck, control is by two pedals and a hand lever mounted under the steering column.
The Matbro 1-ton petrol-engined fork-lift truck, which is of equal value on concreted or virgin surfaces, makes its first public appearance at the exhibition. A detailed description appeared in "The Commercial Motor" dated May 2. A special feature of this appliance is the actuation of the tilting ram mid-way up the mast.
This principle has also been incorporated in the modified 2-ton crosscountry truck available with either a petrol or oil power unit. The 2-tonner was due to be featured on the stand of the manufacturers, Mathew Bros., Sandy Lane North, Wallington, Surrey, at the time of going to press.
The Mercury Truck and Tractor Co., Ltd., 19, London Road, Gloucester, is exhibiting a representative selection of its range of petroland oil-engined machines. This includes the Airtug 46 Oil-engined tractor for towing aircraft, and the Model 40 Shuntug, a dual-purpose tractor that can pull 100 tons on D14 rail and up to 30 tons on road trailers.
• The popular Model 10F is displayed, along with the 10F2 truck complete with detachable sides and tailboard. This machine can carry 2 tons and tow 5 tons.
A new low-loading trailer, known as the Eezion, Is exhibited by Ornic, Ltd., 9, George Street, Manchester Square,. London, W. 1. The body rests on the ground when being loaded and can be raised by built-in hydraulie gear for travelling. The floor height when lowered is 3i ins., and the platform is raised by about 1 ft. for road movement. The trailer is supplied in capacities of 15 cwt., 30 cwt. and 3 tons.
Other Omic exhibits comprise pallet trucks, light conveyors, pallets and crates.
A new Davenset high-discharge battery tester is displayed on the stand of Partridge, Wilson and Co., Ltd., Evington Valley Road, Leicester. It is robust in construction, its casing being made of a special plastic that is reinforced with cotton fibres. The company also exhibits batterycharging equipment and rectifiers for injecting D.C. current into A.C. vibratory screens and conveyers. Ransomes and Rapier, Ltd., Waterside Works, Ipswich, introduces a new 5-ton three-wheeled mobile crane with fully stewing superstructure. This machine can turn in a 10-ft. 10-in. radius and can be supplied with either a Perkins P.4 oil or a Morris M.E.B. petrol power unit. Double wheels are fitted on the front axle and at the rear, and solid or pneumatic tyre equipment can be fitted.
This company is also showing a new cantilever jib attachment for fitting to Rapier fork-lift trucks. This unit is hinged at its centre point at the top of the elevating mast and attached to the body of the truck by an arm at the rear. Lifting is provided by the normal hydraulic ram, and when the attachment is fitted to a truck"With a 17-ft. 6-in, maximum mast height, the hook can be raised to 23 ft.
The jib is made in various sizes and enables trucks to handle loads which do not lend themselves easily to being palletted.
A 10-cwt. fork-lift truck has been added to the range of Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies, Ltd., Orwell Works, Ipswich. This machine is 2 ft. 4 ins.
wide and can turn in a circle 10 ft. in diameter. It is a battery-electri,c type-and can be supplied in 8-ft., -ft.
and 10-ft. lifting capacities. • :
The company also exhibits two Hon fork-lift models and a 2-tonner mounted on 'Cushion tyres. A -crane truck with a 10-cwt. capacity on the jib at 5-ft. radius and 30 cwt. on its platform, a 2-ton platform , truck and.' a 1-ton three-wheeled tractor are also shown. The tractor is compact in design and speed, steering and braking are controlled by one handle.
Britain's largest fork-lift truck, the Freightlifter, is shown on the stand of Shelvoke and Drewry, Ltd., Letchworth, Herts. Two models can be inspected, one powered by the company's own petrol engine and the other with a Perkins P.6 unit. The Freightlifter is designated as a 15,000-18,000-lb. model and was described in "The Comnaercial Motor" dated May 23.
Four standard models are made, with lift heights of 12 ft., 15 ft., 17 ft. 6 ins. and 20 ft. respectively. The tilting ram actuates midway up the mast The turning radius is 14 ft. 3 ins., affording a good degree of manceuvrability for so large a machine, the length of which, without forks, is 13 ft.
A 20-ton mobile crane, the largest made in this country, and a battery electric tractor with a drawbar pull of 4,000 lb. are two new products of Steels Engineering Products, Ltd., Sunderland.
The power unit of the crane is a Ford V8 engine and the appliance exhibited is fitted with an 80-ft. jib. The new tractor is an addition to the Electric Eel range and has a high degree of manceuvrahility. Besides Girling brakes on the driving whee:s, a transmission parking brake is provided.
Hydraulic winch control is the chief feature of a new mechanical shovel exhibited by the Chaseside
Engineering Co., Ltd., Hereford. It incorporates the new Fordson Major tractor engine. Cable Jperation is retained for robustness, and hydraulic control of the winch provides ease of operation.
Scoops of cubic yd., cubic yd. and 1 cubic yd. capacity are available. Loaded with a test weight -of 1 ton, the scoop can be raised from the ground to 10 ft. in 3.6 secs. The machine is 15 ft. long and 6 ft. 11 ins, wide and has a turning circle of
18 ft. 5 ins. Ground clearance is 9/ ins.
Manceuvrability is the premier attraction of the Universal battery-electric truck seen on the stand of Tomlinson Electric Vehicles, Ltd., Sales Department, 10, Renworth Close, Cheshunt, Herts. This machine has two driving wheels on an axle slung under the centre of the chassis, ad a castor wheel at each end. The speed controller applies a transmission brake when released The appliance is offered in a range of three chassis sizes.
T h e company's Stillager appliance is also exhibited. This has a 1-ton capacity and is operated by a tiller which controls steering, braking and speed. A separate reverse lever is provided and another arm is used to bring the platformelevating pump into action. The Roadster chassis, which also lends itself to adoption by non-industrial users, is displayed. The company also has the rights of the Condor vehicle, hoist, a mobile appliance with a lift of about 3 ft. 6 ins. Another new type of 10-cwt. fork-lift truck has been produced by Wessex Industries (Poole), Ltd., West Street, Poole, Dorset. Known as the Wrigley Model 350, it is powered by a petrol engine and the operator is carried standing at the rear. It has a lift of 7 ft. 6 ins. An illustration of this machine appears on a preceding page.
A new battery-electric works truck is also on display. It is similar in layout to the petrol-engined models made by the company, a varied selection of which can be seen. Trailers of 1-ton, 30-cwt. and 2-3-tons capacity are also exhibited.
Wingrove and Rogers, Ltd., Old Swan, Liverpool, is displaying a number of different B.E.V. battery-electric appliances, including the new type DH.23 fork-lift truck. This machine is rated as a 1-tonner and has a lift of 12 ft., or, alternatively, 8 ft. 6 ins. Its length, without forks, is 6 ft. 6 ins., and its width 3 ft. 1 in. The outside turning radius is 6 ft. 4 ins. The height of the 12-ft.-lift model is 7 ft. 11 ins., and that of the smaller type 5 ft. 11 ins.
The Type S,717 heavy-duty platform truck, which is designed and built to meet the rigours of dock service, can also be seen on the company's stand with other models representative of the B.E.V. range.
