A 5,000km (3,100) transSiberian motor highway is being built by the Russians. It will link the Urals with Beikal in the east of Siberia. Construction of the road began in 1962 and about 2,300km (1,430 miles) has already been completed. It may be 10 years before the road is completed.
A large number of branch roads and bypasses—themselves exceeding in total the length of the highway—are also being planned.
