A PROGRAMME to evaluate the use of the Stirling closed cycle piston engine in a Dutch city bus is about to start. The Dutch government is providing the finance for the project which was initiated by Philips and makes use of a DAF vehicle.
The Stirling engine uses an external heat source and there are thus no direct exhaust emissions. It can also run on a wide variety of fuels. One project planned for the bus is to use a "heat battery" to power the engine. This battery will store heat in a solution of molten lithium fluoride.
