• Transfrigoroute's campaign against the pricing policies of the cross-Channel ferry companies (CM 31 January), has resulted in the referral of the organisation's complaints to the Office of Fair Trading.
Robin East, Transfiigoroute chairman, first wrote complaining about the situation to the Prime Minister in Feburary. In his letter East said: "We must express serious concern when all the ferry operators, without exception, impose identical increases on the same date and all, again without exception, totally refuse to negotiate lower increases, yet assure us they do not operate a cartel."
Mrs Thatcher's private secretary Andrew Bearpark has replied saying: "The ferry companies made certain undertakings to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry after a Monopolies Commission report on their car and accompanying passenger business in 1974," Bearpark has now referred Transfrigoroute's complaints to the Office of Fair Trading.
