Cleansing Department Builds Hydraulic Press Largely from Disused Vehicle Parts
SALVAGE and public cleansing afford scope for much.. ingenuity in the development of appliances for efficiently and economically .accomplishing the numerous and widely different tasks that are included in this sphere of activity, which is inseparably allied to transport. The exercise of engineering ability, however, is not confined to the manufacturers Of what is commonly described as municipal machinery.
Good work in the designing and construction of devices for expediting operations, saving cost, and promoting smooth working of local departments is often done by the individuals concerned therewith.
An excellent instance of such an effort forms the subject of the accompanying illustrations. They show a baling press for waste paper and tins that has been built by the cleansing superintendent of Blaby Rural District Council, Mr. A. Riley. Additional interest is lent by the fact that the main part of the machine started life as an hydraulic
under-body tipping gear. Indeed, it still bears the shaker's name and address, the Hydraulic Hoist Co., ,Lord Street, Southport.
The containers are sturdily made and are semi-collapsible. They are transported to and from the press an seIf7jacking trolleys, also made by the department. Two stanchions of 9-in. by 4-in, girder, with heavy cross-bracing, form the main framework of the press. They support the vertical ram that formerly provided power for the tipping gear. It is still operated by the same hydraulic pump, which is now driven, by a 2 h.p. electric motor, through the medium of a worm unit and three-speed gear from a car.
With regard to cost, it is noteworthy that the whole machine represents an outlay of less than £50, of which £8 10s. is accounted for by the switch gear—the most expensive item of the appliance. It has now been in use satisfactorily doing valuable work for several months.
