LADY GAMMANS (Tory, Hornsey) .1-4 asked that heavily-loaded lorries should be prohibited from using steep hills in towns, in view of recent accidents. She said this was done at present on certain unsuitable country roads, but Mr. Marples told her that where there were specific restrictions on country roads they applied to the weight of the vehicle—not to that of the load.
This would not be appropriate to steep main roads in towns, said the Minister. What was needed was to ensure that the weight carried did not exceed what the vehicle could safely carry, and he was considering various measures.
